Amnesty for Pussy Riot and Greenpeace activists in Russia
Pussy Riot members and 30 Greenpeace activists arrested in September, the Swiss Marco Weber, will benefit from an amnesty passed Wednesday in Russia.
Russian MPs on Wednesday approved the law on amnesty for the 20 years of the Constitution, which will benefit including members of Pussy Riot and 30 Greenpeace activists, including Zurich Marco Weber and 25 other foreigners. Date of return is not yet known.
The text presented by the Kremlin on December 9, was adopted by 446 deputies out of 450 in the Duma (lower house) in the final reading. The former oil tycoon and Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky will not benefit.
Amnesty for small sentences
The law passed in particular provides amnesty for persons sentenced to less than 5 years in prison sentences, including for "hooliganism", what is the charge against the Pussy Riot, and which are prosecuted members of Greenpeace.
Greenpeace members were arrested in September after an action against an oil platform in the Russian Arctic .
The two young women of the protest group Pussy Riot, serving a sentence of two years in prison for having sung in February 2012 a "punk prayer" against Vladimir Putin in Moscow cathedral, must anyway be released in March.
