At least 41 people have died in a bus accident outside Kenya's capital Nairobi, police said. Four of the victims are children. 39 passengers injured and taken to hospital.

It's a horrible sight, the policeman said Samuel Kimaru by telephone from the scene Thursday

The bus was traveling from Nairobi to Homa Bay on Lake Victoria when it ran off the road and rolled down a slope.
The accident occurred about midway on the 355 km journey at two in the morning on Thursday morning local time. The accident site is located 140 km west of Nairobi, about 15 km from Narok, the Pinyini hill at Ntulele.

The roof torn off

The bus swerved out of the way and went around several times according to eyewitnesses. The roof of the bus was torn off, before the voyage ended at the bottom of the valley.
Preliminary research suggests that the move may have been too high. Another possibility may be that the bus was too heavily loaded.
Kenyan Red Cross report on Twitter that the accident cost 41 people their lives and 27 others were injured.

Police at the site told AFP that rescue work is difficult because the terrain is steep and there is a lot of vegetation.
Fatal accidents are common in traffic in Kenya, where the main roads often lack both barriers and reflective paint.
