Taliban say they will release a U.S. soldier who has been held since 2009 if the United States does the same with five Guantánamo detainees.

It said Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen told The AP from the newly opened Taliban office in Doha, Qatar.

He says the Taliban are willing to release the 23-year-old American sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who disappeared in eastern Afghanistan 30 June 2009.

In return, they want the United States to release five senior members of the Islamist movement, detained at Guantanamo Bay.
