Israel fights against locusts

The Israelis are fighting a modern plague of Egypt: Huge swarms of locusts threatening to do great damage to crops in southern Israel.

The battle to eradicate the locusts was  initiated after the insects on Wednesday struck down as living blankets in rural areas 

Crews on the ground and in the air sprayed insecticides on locusts in an attempt to kill them.

- We hope this is effective and that locusts do minimal damage, said the pilot of one of the planes that took part in the spraying.

- Everything depends on the wind, and we hope that it does not carry with them swarms, said potato farmer Pavel Rosenfeld.

Eat mostly what they come across

According to the newspaper Haaretz there comprises one of the swarms that have hit the country of over a million locusts.

It will be the first time since 2005 that Israel will suffer from a form of plague already mentioned in the sacred writings which Christians call the Old Testament.

In Exodus describes a devastating locust plague in Egypt.

Scientists say the locusts eat most anything they are  coming across, the leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds and even the bark of the trees.
