U.S. warns of abduction hazard at Machu Picchu
A criminal group should have plans to kidnap American tourists visiting Machu Picchu and Cusco region, according to the U.S. Embassy in Lima.
U.S. warns to be cautious while traveling to the famous Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru. The U.S. government believes there is a risk of abduction in the area.
The U.S. Embassy in Lima says it has information about a criminal group planning to kidnap American tourists visiting Machu Picchu and Cusco region.
It is not clear from the statement the group in question, but the rebels of the Maoist Shining Path guerrillas hiding continued in parts of the jungle in Cusco.
36 construction workers, most of them from the Swedish company Skanska, was taken prisoner by the Shining Path in Cusco in April last year and was released after five days.
