Pope Benedict abdicates

Pope Benedict XVI yesterday 28 February, 2013. He goes off because of failing health and advanced age.
Pope Benedict yesterday of 28 February at 20, says his spokesman Federico Lombardi.

Pope says the reason he now says is that he lacks the power to control the Church due to his advanced age.

Pope's almost 86 years, and was born 16 april 1927 in Germany, Joseph Ratzinger Luigi.

Justifies departure with age

1046: Gregor VI - after the disclosure that he paid his predecessor to resign
1294: Celestine V - voluntary

- I've noticed that I've lost a lot of power in recent months, to the extent that I have had to realize that I am not able to fill the office of which I am entrusted, the pope said.

- For that reason, and fully aware of the gravity of the act, I declare that I renounce the office of bishop of Rome and St. Paul's successor.

Pope's brother Georg Ratzinger says that Benedict has been banned from his doctor to make transatlantic flights.

- The age weighs His Holy Father. He finds it increasingly difficult to walk. Mortality is part of a normal process. Now they want my brother to rest, says the 89 year old brother.

Holy See will remain vacant until such time as  a new pope is elected. This will be achieved by Easter.

The cardinals will gather in conclave 15 to 20 days after Benedict's departure. The Pope will not even participate in the election of his successor, and not be afraid that it will cause division in the church after his retirement.

XVI was elected pope April 24, 2005.

Surprised

According Federico Lombardi everyone was surprised.

- We were taken back a bit by surprise today... by this message, Lombardi said in a press conference.

Lombardi believes the pope may have chosen this time to go on to be  released from the tense Easter program.

Pope Benedict will temporarily move into the Pope's summer residence outside Rome. Later he will stay in an apartment in the Vatican.

Very rare

- I believe this has not happened before, says Professor of Political Science and Catholic Janne Haaland Matlary.

- I know, this is the second time this happened, the last time was in the 1400s. So one can safely say that it is not normal.

- How did you react when you became aware of news?

- I was very surprised. It's strange if it was true, for there is no precedent for it. It frequently has been attrition, says Bratbak.

He points out that Pope Benedict XVI has been a popular pope for many.

SE Pope FAREWELL LETTER BELOW:

"Dear brothers,

I have called you together for this meeting, not only for the three canonization, but also to convey to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church.

After repeatedly having examined my conscience before God, I have come to the knowledge that my strength, due to an advanced age, is no longer suitable for a satisfactory performance of the papacy.

I am fully aware that this office, due to his spiritual nature, must be exercised, not only in words and deeds, but also with prayer and suffering. In today's world, which is the subject of so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of fundamental importance to the life of faith, we must, to manage Saint Peters ship and preach the word of God, possessing strength in both mind and body, strength in the past few months have vanished in me to such an extent that I had to admit my lack of capacity to fulfill the office entrusted to me.

For this reason, knowing the seriousness of this action, I declare with full freedom that I renounce the office of Bishop of Rome, successor to St. Peter, entrusted to me by the 19 cardinals April 2005 in such a way that from 28 February 2013, at 20:00, the Holy See , and a conclave to select the new pope will have to be appointed by them whose responsibilities it is.
