If that happens, the main trafficking routes for people in the Gaza Strip disappear.

Fear of weapons smuggling

The new Islamic regime in Egypt has close ties to the ruling Palestinian Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip, but many Egyptians believe the tunnels pose a significant security risk for the country.

Leftist lawyers say they brought the matter in cooperation with activists to pressure the government to act.

President Mohamed Morsis security adviser Essam Haddad has said that Egypt will not tolerate the extensive flow of weapons smuggled through tunnels that destabilizes the Sinai Peninsula.
