Cuba Re Elects Castro
National Assembly of Cuba has re-elected Raul Castro as president for five years.
The 81 year old former general has served as president since 2006, when his brother Fidel fell ill after having ruled the country for 49 years.
When Fidel Castro formally stepped down as president in 2008, Raul Castro elected successor. Now he starts his second and final five-year period.
- This will be my last time, he said in a televised speech shortly after he was reelected.
The Cuban National Assembly elected Sunday Miguel Diaz-Canel to first vice president and 52-year-old is considered therefore that the Castro brothers most likely successor.
Diaz-Canel is a graduate electrical engineer and former Minister of Education in Cuba.
