China Demands Kerry Re open Talks with North Korea

China wants North Korea and the United States to the negotiating table

China urges North Korea and the U.S. to resume dialogue after  recent nuclear test.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi spoke with his American counterpart John Kerry. During the phone call  Yang called to re-open the six nations talks on North Korea's nuclear program, which has been deadlocked for a long time, must be resumed.

- We call on all relevant parties to focus on the overall situation, give it an appropriate response and prevent the situation escalating. Yang said to Kerry, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry sources.

A spokesman for the U.S. State Department said the U.S. is now working very closely with China about the situation that has arisen after the authorities in Pyongyang conducted nuclear test explosion on Tuesday.

The same sources said that Yang also discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula, the South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung Hwan.

Chinese discontent

China has traditionally been North Korea's closest ally, but are not always enthusiastic about what dictator Kim Jong-un and his predecessors have taken on.

After Tuesday's nuclear test gave the Chinese government a clear message that North Korea must abide by its international obligations.

The North Korean ambassador to China  also been summoned to Foreign Minister Yang where he said the Foreign Ministry received a clear message about China's displeasure with the nuclear test.

But although China scolds  North Korea, it will not likely have much influence.

China has always been unwilling to support strict sanctions on North Korea for fear that it could lead to unrest in the unpredictable neighbor.

When the U.S. is now considering a revolution in military commitment in Asia, China is probably even less willing to follow the line from Washington.

- The more the U.S. restructures its forces in western Asia, the more leeway get China to adjust its relationship with North Korea, said Shen Dingli, an expert on regional security at Fudan University in Shanghai.

- North Korea knows how to exploit the mistrust between China and the U.S., he said.
