UN sends troops to Mali

The UN Security Council has unanimously approved sending an African led intervention force to Mali where Islamists with ties to Al Qaeda have taken control of the north of the country.

The Security Council gave the force a mandate of one year to take back the northern part of the country from "terrorists, extremists and armed groups."
