At least 19 killed in train accident in Egypt

At least 19 soldiers were killed when a troop train derailed in a suburb of Cairo on Tuesday.
Over 100 others were injured in the accident, according to Egyptian media.

Two of the carriages of the train derailed and overturned southwest of the center of the Egyptian capital, but the cause of the derailment was not known Tuesday morning.

Wounded soldiers were taken to the nearby hospital, according to the health ministry. Over 60 ambulances took part in rescue efforts.

The recruits were on their way to a military camp when the accident happened.

Notorious for poor security
Egypt's railways and roads are notorious for poor security and many fatal accidents.

In November, killed at least 50 people when a train collided with a school bus at a railroad crossing. Most of the fatalities were children.

The country's transport minister resigned after the accident.

Prime Minister Hesham Qandil was abused by local residents when he arrived at the site of Tuesday's derailment, and accused of having blood on his hands.
