The woman, who according to the Australian newspaper The National was the 20 year old Kepari Leniata, was allegedly tortured with fire and iron set on fire on top of a bonfire with tires.
The newspaper Post-Courier writes that she was tortured by villagers claiming she had killed a six year old boy with magic.

It must have been too few police officers on the job that they could avert the macabre incident Wednesday morning in the town of Mount Hagen.
A fire engine that came out to extinguish the fire, was driven away, writes AFP.
Many in the poor part of the Pacific still believe in witchcraft, and natural explanations of deaths are often rebuffed.
In 1971 it introduced a magic clause, but Papa New Guinea Reform Commission has recently proposed to eliminate this by an increasing number of attacks against people suspected of practicing black magic.
