Clashes in Tunisia after politician murder

One of the country's leading opposition politicians, Shokri Belaid, was shot Wednesday and died shortly after from the injuries he suffered.

The Tunisian Interior Ministry announced later in the day that the man who shot Belaid, ran against him on a motorcycle.

After firing the shots, he fled with an accomplice, according to a statement from the ministry.

The killing led to massive protests in Tunis and in the afternoon were reported clashes between police and protesters.

- People are very upset. It's a very tense situation both in the capital and elsewhere in the country, says journalist Wiemer Cristo news agency TT.

Belaid was the leader of the leftist opposition party Movement of Democratic patriots.

The party, according to Reuters announced that it withdraws from parliament, and it also calls for a general strike in Tunisia.
