Tsunami Destroyed Much of the Solomon Islands

Tsunami destroyed much of the Solomon Islands

Rescue Team tried Thursday to reach the villages that were hit by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami on a remote island in the Solomon Islands the day before.
Officially six people confirmed dead after the earthquake caused a tsunami that laid the villages along the coast of the island  under water. Several houses have been moved many yards, and 95 percent of the houses in the village called Nela are no more.

The airstrip closed

So far rescue workers have not managed to reach the island, located 600 kilometers from the capital Honiara, partly because the airstrip is closed due to sand, trees and debris.

The Red Cross says it is made reconnaissance flights over the island on Thursday, but the preliminary message is that at least 460 homes have been destroyed.

The reports so far have come about destruction, come from villages that are provided along the way. Little is known about the other villages.

Aid to promote the first weekend

Boats with emergencies such as tarpaulins, fresh water and medical supplies  leave from Honiara on Thursday, but is not expected to arrive before the weekend.
