Thousands of Egyptians demonstrated Friday against the Israeli air attacks on the Gaza Strip, while President Mohamed Mursi pledged to support the Palestinians.
Governments in the West are curious to see what Egypt's response to the conflict between Israel and Hamas is after Islamists who are allied with Hamas came to power after the uprising against the regime of Hosni Mubarak last year.
Mursi are fully aware of the anti-Israeli atmosphere that prevails in the population, but he also needs to show Western countries that his new government does not threaten the peace of the Middle East.
So far he has expressed severe criticism towards Israel and support the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as he has sent Prime Minister Hisham Kandil on a visit to Gaza.
But Egypt has also been in close dialogue with the U.S. and other Western countries who want him to try to persuade Hamas to halt rocket attacks on Israel
